The Cinque Terre national park is easily one of the most idyllic places you can visit in Italy. People have lived on these steep slopes along the Mediterranean coast for centuries; growing wine, catching fish, building trade routes, forging alliances and fending off pirates, all the while living harmoniously with nature.
The name Cinque Terre literally translates to Five Lands and it refers to the five picturesque coastal villages that have shaped this area for many years. Nowadays, their main income stems from tourism. This does mean that these places can get rather crowded during the day, so definitely try to visit during off season and/or in the early morning or late evening to get that more authentic experience.
