The following page serves as an impression of my personal two week itinerary through the eastern and northern parts of Sicily in May and June of 2022. This trip started and ended in the city of Catania. From Catania I took the train heading for Syracusa. That's where I rented a car for the rest of the journey. If you ask me, exploring the island by car is definitely the way to go. It's by far the most convenient way to reach most of these beautiful and interesting places. Sicily is the ultimate roadtrip island. Just be ready and prepared for some wild traffic and tricky roads along the way.
Mount Etna
Probably the most iconic landmark of Sicily is Mount Etna. It dominates the horizon across a large part of the eastern coast of the island. From Catania, you can book several tours that take you up the volcano. It usually involves a 45 minute van or bus ride toward the top. From there you hike the rest of the way. How close you can actually get to the main crater, is dependant on current weather conditions and volcanic activity. When I visited in 2022, this is about as close as we were allowed to get.
Catania
Catania is more than just a base from where you can scale Mount Etna. It's a very vibrant and lively city. Somewhat rough around the edges perhaps, but that's what gives it character. There's loads of hip bars, restaurants and cafes on offer. The very center of the city is also free of cars, so you can stroll at your leisure.
Definitely check out the local fish market while you're there. It's one of the liveliest places in town and perfect for getting a first hand impression of local life.
Catania has pretty buildings and squares as well though. It's brimming with cultural history. This place has something for everyone to enjoy.
Syracusa
Further to the south lies the ancient port town of Syracusa. Dating back to Ancient Greek times, it's old city center is beautifully preserved and there's many ancient sites to explore as well. Don't forget about it's picturesque coastline either. From Catania, it's easy to get there by either train or car.
Like most Mediterranean cities, the place truly comes alive in the evening.
Baroque Towns in Noto Valley
Lovers of Baroque architecture should definitely check out the south east of Sicily, as it is littered with towns built in this style. The town of Noto is possibly the best preserved of the bunch and a relatively short drive away from Syracusa.
Classic Italian cars like this red Fiat 500 really complete the picture in places like these.
The town of Scicli, further to the south west, seems a lot quieter compared to Noto, at least when I visited. but is equally as gorgeous.
Modica is uniquely situated in between two hills, with the main road running in between and the town built on either hillside. It leaves a striking impression for sure.
Picture perfect Ragusa is situated on a hill within a larger valley, which leads to some dramatic scenes, especially during sunset.
Marzameni Fishing Village
All the way to the south east lies the cute fishing village of Marzameni. It was rather quiet during my visit, but it can be quite busy on the right days. It's a good getaway for tasting fresh seafood.
Pottery town of Caltagirone
Further inland, toward the middle of the island, lies the bustling town of Caltagirone, famous for it's pottery. It's most distinct feature is the 142-step staircase of Santa Maria del Monte, which takes you all the way to the highest point of town.
Villa Romana del Casale
Keep going further west and you'll eventually run into the ancient Roman ruins of Villa Romana del Casale. Admire it's uniquely preserved mosaics before continuing your travels.
Countryside
While driving through the countryside of central Sicily, you'll come across many wonderful sights and views.
Coastal City of Cefalu
Way up on the northern coast, just past the Madonie Mountain range, lies the coastal city of Cefalu. Perfect place to catch some sun and enjoy the relaxed beach life.
Mountain Town Castelbuono
Castelbuono is the biggest town in the Madonie mountains and a great base from where to explore the surrounding region. They had a flower festival going on during my visit, which really livened up the place.
Northern Coastline
A drive along the northern coastline will provide you with numerous opportunities to soak in the sun.
Timisoara and Castelmola
Pretty Timisoara and Castelmola are situated on the eastern coast of Sicily and offer dramatic views of smokey Mount Etna. From here it's only a two hour drive back to Catania.
